John Randolph, 3rd Earl of Moray – Scottish Hero of the 14th Century 🏴⚔️
John Randolph, 3rd Earl of Moray, was a key figure in Scotland’s fight for independence during the turbulent 14th century. A brave warrior, skilled commander, and loyal ally of King David II, Randolph played a pivotal role in the struggle against English domination following the death of Robert the Bruce.

A Legacy Forged in Battle
Born into the powerful Randolph family, John was the son of Thomas Randolph, 1st Earl of Moray, one of Robert the Bruce’s closest allies. After his father’s death, he inherited both the title and the responsibility of defending Scotland’s freedom. His tactical prowess and unwavering courage made him a feared leader on the battlefield.

The Second War of Scottish Independence – Randolph played a leading role in defending Scotland from English invasions. He was captured at the Battle of Halidon Hill (1333) but later exchanged and continued his fight against the English.
The Raid of Balliol and the Return of David II – In the years following his release, Randolph worked alongside other Scottish nobles to restore King David II to the throne, resisting the claims of Edward Balliol, the English-backed pretender.
His Final Battle – In 1346, Randolph joined the Battle of Neville’s Cross, a disastrous Scottish defeat against the English. Leading the charge, he fought valiantly but was killed in combat, marking the end of his legacy.
An Icon of Scottish Resistance
John Randolph remains a symbol of defiance and national pride in Scotland’s medieval history. His contributions to the wars of independence helped shape the future of the Scottish kingdom.
