King David II of Scotland – The Exiled Warrior King 🏴👑⚔️
David II of Scotland, son of Robert the Bruce, was a king forged by war and exile during one of Scotland’s most challenging periods. His tumultuous reign (1329–1371) was marked by constant struggle against English aggression, long years in captivity, and the effort to preserve Scotland’s hard-won independence.

The Heir to a Heroic Legacy
Born in 1324, David became king at the age of 5, following the death of his father, Robert the Bruce, the legendary liberator of Scotland. His rule began under the guidance of powerful regents like Thomas Randolph, Earl of Moray, but it was soon tested by renewed English invasions.

Exile and Captivity
The Second War of Scottish Independence – In 1332, Edward Balliol, backed by England, invaded Scotland to claim the throne. With Scotland in turmoil, young David and his queen fled to France in 1334, finding refuge at the court of King Philip VI.
The Battle of Neville’s Cross (1346) – After returning to Scotland and regaining control, David sought to strike at England while King Edward III was occupied with war in France. However, his campaign ended in disaster—David was captured in battle and held prisoner in England for 11 years.
The King’s Ransom – Finally released in 1357, Scotland had to pay an enormous ransom for David’s freedom. Though he returned to rule, his later years were marked by political instability and tension with the Scottish nobles.
A Controversial but Resilient Monarch
Despite his long captivity, David II managed to preserve Scotland’s sovereignty, ensuring that his kingdom remained independent. He ruled until his death in 1371, leaving behind a Scotland that, despite its hardships, remained free from English rule.
