He was a monarch who embodied medieval knighthood, facing both triumphs and crushing defeats, ultimately leaving an indelible mark on French history.
A King Born for War and Honor
Born on April 16, 1319, Jean II was the son of Philip VI, the first king of the Valois dynasty. From an early age, he was groomed for kingship in a time of political instability and war, as France was locked in a bitter struggle against England in the Hundred Years' War (1337–1453).
Upon ascending to the throne in 1350, following the death of his father, Jean II inherited a kingdom weakened by war, economic strain, and internal dissent. However, he embraced his role with a fierce sense of duty and honor, seeing himself as a warrior king in the tradition of the great chivalric rulers before him.
The Founding of the Order of the Star – Rivaling the Knights of the Garter
Jean II was deeply invested in the ideals of chivalry, seeking to revive the honor and prestige of the French nobility. In 1351, he established the Order of the Star, a prestigious chivalric order meant to rival England’s Order of the Garter. Members of this elite brotherhood were bound by an oath to never flee in battle, even at the cost of their lives.
This order reflected Jean’s unwavering belief in the knightly code, and his leadership inspired a generation of warriors to uphold honor, loyalty, and courage on the battlefield. However, this devotion to chivalry would lead him into one of the greatest disasters in French history.
The Catastrophe at Poitiers (1356) – The Capture of a King
Determined to restore French dominance against the English, Jean II personally led his army against the English forces of the legendary Black Prince, Edward of Woodstock, at the Battle of Poitiers in 1356.
Despite commanding a numerically superior French army, Jean’s rigid adherence to chivalric ideals and direct combat led to tactical miscalculations. The French forces were crushed, and Jean II was taken prisoner, captured alongside his son Philip and numerous French nobles. This humiliation echoed the disaster of Crécy (1346) and sent France into chaos.
While in captivity, Jean was treated with great respect by the English, as was customary for noble prisoners. His sense of honor and duty was so strong that he refused to escape, choosing instead to ransom himself back to France through the Treaty of Brétigny in 1360.
A King’s Ransom and an Oath of Honor
The Treaty of Brétigny was one of the most humiliating treaties in French history, as it required France to pay a staggering ransom of 3 million gold écus and surrender vast territories to England. Jean, ever the man of his word, sought to uphold the agreement despite the immense burden on his people.
When his hostage replacements (sent in his place as part of the treaty’s conditions) escaped, Jean chose to return to English captivity voluntarily, fulfilling his knightly oath—a decision that shocked Europe. This act of honor and sacrifice reinforced his legendary status as a true knight-king, despite the strategic consequences for France.
Jean II died in captivity in London on April 8, 1364, leaving behind a kingdom in crisis but a legacy of loyalty, bravery, and chivalric devotion.
