How My Own Painting Tutorial Saved Me from a Painting Crisis – And Why I’m Motivated to Keep Making Videos

on

Hey fellow hobbyists! 👋 Today, I want to share a fun story about how I almost hit a major snag while trying to finish a project and how my own painting tutorial came to the rescue – unexpectedly!

So, let’s rewind a bit. I was recently working on completing a squad of Orc Scouts on Grimfang that had been sitting unfinished for over a year. I’d already painted part of the unit and, like I usually do, I meant to write down the exact color scheme in my notebook. Normally, this is my go-to method for keeping track of everything – it’s a lifesaver when returning to projects after long breaks. But for some reason, this time I completely forgot to write it down. 😬

When I finally sat down to finish the squad, I realized I had no clue what colors I used! I was staring at these half-painted orcs, trying to remember how I’d managed to get the exact look I wanted for their armor, fur and skin. Needless to say, I was getting a bit desperate.

After a little bit of frustration, I had a moment of inspiration: I remembered that I had filmed a painting tutorial with a similar scheme not too long ago! Sure enough, I went back, watched the video, and there it was – the exact steps I needed to recreate the original color scheme. It was a real stroke of luck, and thanks to my own video, I was able to finish the squad without any issues.

This little experience made me realize just how useful tutorials can be, even for the person who creates them! It also motivated me to keep making these videos, knowing that they’re not only helpful for others but can also save me from my own painting crises. 😄

Why Quick and Simple Painting Tutorials Matter

As hobbyists, we often get caught up in the details, but sometimes we just want to get things done. That’s where my latest tutorial for the Wraiths of Halgaroth comes in. In this video, I walk through a super fast and simple paint scheme that lets you get your army ready for the battlefield in under two hours. It’s perfect for busy hobbyists who don’t want to spend days on each unit.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the process:

Prime in white.

Apply a wash of Military Shader and Blue Tone to get that ghostly, spectral effect.

Simple basing with glue, pebbles, and grass to keep it quick but effective.

The goal here is to have a fully painted army in no time, and this method really does the trick! Plus, it’s something you can easily do with your kids – my 7-year-old helped me paint part of this army, and it was a blast.

How Tutorials Keep the Hobby Momentum Going

After finishing that orc scout squad using my own tutorial for guidance, I felt a renewed sense of energy to keep pushing forward with my painting projects. I think that’s one of the coolest things about making tutorials – not only do they help others, but they also keep you motivated.

I’ve got plenty of armies to finish before I can dive into battle reports, and making these quick tutorials is a great way to stay on track. Plus, having these videos to refer back to means I never have to worry about forgetting a color scheme again!

This latest tutorial is all about speed and simplicity, so if you need to get an army ready in record time, check it out. I’ve got plenty more projects on the horizon, and I’ll be sharing more tutorials soon. Hopefully, they’ll help you as much as they’ve helped me!

The miniatures I painted in this tutorial are from KZKMINIS. If you're interested, you can grab the STL files directly from KzKminis on MyMiniFactory. And if you don’t have a 3D printer, no worries! You can buy pre-printed versions from Proxywars.

Thanks for reading, and happy painting!
